Damascus JV Falls to Churchill, 60–20
The Damascus Hornets JV girls’ basketball team continued to grow and gain experience in their matchup against Churchill, ultimately falling 60–20. With only one returning player on the roster—sophomore Allyana Hoffman—the young Hornets continue to rely heavily on their talented freshman class as they develop chemistry early in the season.
Freshman guards Ellie Dove and Olivia Egan paced the Hornets offensively, each finishing with 5 points. Egan also showcased her playmaking ability, leading the team with 2 assists.
On the boards, Damascus received strong efforts from their frontcourt. Hoffman anchored the interior with a team-high 6 rebounds, while freshman forward Corrie Stiritz matched her with 6 rebounds of her own, providing much-needed toughness in the paint.
Despite the final score, the Hornets showed competitive flashes and continue to build a foundation for the season. With so many new faces contributing meaningful minutes, Damascus is poised for steady improvement as the team gains experience and confidence.
L 57-23 AWAY Fri, Dec 12, 5:30pm @ Sherwood
The Damascus JV girls basketball team faced a tough challenge on the road against rival Sherwood, dropping a 57–23 decision to the Warriors.
The rivalry matchup began with a difficult opening quarter for Damascus, as Sherwood jumped out to a 22–4 lead after the first period. Despite the early deficit, the Hornets continued to compete and showed flashes of hustle and determination throughout the game.
Freshman guard Caitlyn Dunkelberger led Damascus with an all-around performance, finishing with 11 points, 7 rebounds, 4 steals, and 3 assists. Freshman forward Kyla Amoako provided a strong presence inside, contributing 8 points and 7 rebounds. Sophomore center Allyana Hoffman added to the effort on the glass with 5 rebounds.
Although the final score favored Sherwood, the Hornets gained valuable experience competing in a rivalry environment. The game highlighted individual growth and effort that Damascus can build on as the season progresses.
L 39-40 HOME Mon, Dec 15, 5:30pm vs Wootton
The Damascus JV girls basketball team was locked in a thrilling, back-and-forth battle with the Wootton Patriots, but a late three-pointer and missed free throws proved costly in a narrow loss.
Damascus came out firing, jumping to an 11–0 lead to open the game. Wootton responded quickly, however, and edged ahead 12–11 by the end of the first quarter. Both teams applied relentless full-court pressure throughout the night, creating a fast-paced, physical contest with momentum swinging on nearly every possession.
The Hornets regained control before halftime, taking a slim 19–18 lead into the break. The intensity continued in the second half, with neither team able to pull away. With just over three minutes remaining, Damascus took a 39–37 lead on a highlight-reel play, as freshman point guard Caitlyn Dunkelberger delivered an outstanding cross-court assist to sophomore forward Allyana Hoffman for the basket.
Wootton answered late, taking the lead with 20 seconds remaining on a deep, banked-in three-pointer. Damascus earned one final opportunity when Dunkelberger was fouled with 0.2 seconds left, giving her a chance to tie or win the game at the free-throw line. Unfortunately for the Hornets, both shots rimmed out. Damascus finished just 1-for-10 from the foul line on the night, a key factor in the outcome.
Dunkelberger led the Hornets with 14 points, along with 6 assists and 6 steals in a strong all-around performance. Hoffman added 8 points and a team-high 10 rebounds. Freshman guard Autumn Graves had her best night of the young season, contributing 11 points and 4 rebounds.
Despite the tough finish, the Hornets’ effort, energy, and growth were evident in a game that came down to the final second.
L 53-37 HOME Wed, Dec 17, 5:30pm vs Poolesville
JV Girls Basketball Recap: Damascus vs. Poolesville
The Damascus JV girls basketball team fell to the Poolesville Falcons, 53–37, in a game that showcased resilience, defensive intensity, and strong individual performances from a young Hornets squad.
Damascus got off to a slow start, trailing 9–1 at the end of the first quarter. The Hornets responded in the second quarter by turning up the defensive pressure, forcing turnovers and finding better offensive rhythm. Their effort paid off as they nearly evened the score for the quarter, heading into halftime down just 17–16.
The momentum continued into the third quarter, with Damascus battling on both ends of the floor and keeping the game within reach. Despite the push, the Hornets entered the fourth quarter trailing 27–23. In the final period, Poolesville pulled away as Damascus struggled to maintain its earlier intensity, allowing the Falcons to extend the lead and secure the win.

Freshman shooting guard Olivia Egan contributed 10 points and 3 assists, while shooting a perfect 4-for-4 from the free-throw line.
