L 39-40 HOME Mon, Dec 15, 5:30pm vs Wootton

The Damascus JV girls basketball team was locked in a thrilling, back-and-forth battle with the Wootton Patriots, but a late three-pointer and missed free throws proved costly in a narrow loss.

Damascus came out firing, jumping to an 11–0 lead to open the game. Wootton responded quickly, however, and edged ahead 12–11 by the end of the first quarter. Both teams applied relentless full-court pressure throughout the night, creating a fast-paced, physical contest with momentum swinging on nearly every possession.

The Hornets regained control before halftime, taking a slim 19–18 lead into the break. The intensity continued in the second half, with neither team able to pull away. With just over three minutes remaining, Damascus took a 39–37 lead on a highlight-reel play, as freshman point guard Caitlyn Dunkelberger delivered an outstanding cross-court assist to sophomore forward Allyana Hoffman for the basket.

Wootton answered late, taking the lead with 20 seconds remaining on a deep, banked-in three-pointer. Damascus earned one final opportunity when Dunkelberger was fouled with 0.2 seconds left, giving her a chance to tie or win the game at the free-throw line. Unfortunately for the Hornets, both shots rimmed out. Damascus finished just 1-for-10 from the foul line on the night, a key factor in the outcome.
